Are Perler beads recyclable?
Hama Beads are made out of polyethylene and Hama Pegboards are made out of polystyrene. These plastics are of food packaging grade quality. Both Hama Beads and Hama Pegboards can be recycled with normal household plastic waste.
What do you need for Perler beads?
There are only a few other supplies you will need if you bought (or were gifted) just the beads:
- You will need at least one Perler Bead pegboard. These come in different shapes.
- Perler Bead ironing paper or your everyday parchment paper. Please don’t even think about using wax paper.
- You need an iron to melt the beads.
How do you iron large Perler bead projects?
Place ironing paper over the section of the design you will fuse. In a circular motion, begin to iron the project. Beads need heat for about 10-20 seconds per side to fuse evenly, but it’s possible additional heating time may be required.
Are Hama Beads and Perler beads the same?
Hama beads have a lower melting point than perler beads, and you can see from this picture that they look quite a bit different when melted. The hama beads ended up being noticeably shorter and more rounded at the top (like nabbi beads) than perler beads. They also have a bit more gloss to them than Perlers.

How long do you put Perler beads in the oven?
Make sure the beads all stand on their ends and with enough space in-between to melt down. Then you bake the beads in a preheated oven at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes. When the beads are cooled, they are ready for use.
What paper do you use to iron Hama Beads?
You can get special “ironing paper” which is like greaseproof paper. Ironing is a bit trial and error! If you leave the iron on too long you can end up with a melted board (voice of experience!)
